As builders and active riders, we love being part of the community, both locally and on social media. A group we frequently check out is a mini ramp group on social media. In March of 2022, we were looking at the group posts one Sunday, and couldn’t help but respond to this guy named AJ who was looking for some help building some ramps.. I had no idea what was about to open up… Two days later I was standing in this really cool Prohibition-era building in Bay City, MI, 736 miles from home, after talking to this guy AJ, who told me he was going all in on his dream! No heat, scabbed in electricity, and a freezing cold March night! He flew me out to do a consult, and to share his vision of what he was trying to do.
Bay City is a town of about 33,000 people. Not huge! Tough to support a skatepark in a town this size. A competing skatepark is 2 hours away, but other than that, there’s not a lot in that part of the state. On top of that, as rad as this space is, it’s tough to design something that is worth the effort in a building like this. AJ definitely threw a challenge our way! But I can honestly say, in 25 years of doing this, the passion AJ had for his dream, the really cool brick walls, and the opportunity to bring this to this community makes this hands down one of my favorite builds! This is more than a place to ride. It’s a destination. It’s another incredible space that aims to further skateboarding in Michigan, and everywhere else it brings people from.
